Alexanderplatz at the bottom of the television tower has been named after Tsar Alexander I since 1805 and was once used as a parade ground and market square. Today shoppers and visitors to the television tower throng on the sprawling square. Following the renovation of the square, the complete redesign of the Kaufhof department store and C&A's move into the listed Berolinahaus (1929) designed by Peter Behrens, the square has completely changed. Only the world clock and the people's friendship fountain still recall the old days of the GDR.
